Myrtle Gonzalez

MYRTLE GONZALEZ TRIBUTE

(30 MINUTES) FRI AUG 30TH – 3:05PM

Special tribute to actress Myrtle Gonzalez, who was a trailblazing Mexican-American star of the silent era who captivated audiences with her talent and beauty. Despite a tragically short life and career, her impact on Hollywood remains significant, paving the way for future generations of Latinas in cinema. In her honor we will be showing two rarely seen films from 1916: a short subject called The Kiss and reel two of the feature, The End of the Rainbow, both courtesy of The Library of Congress. In Attendance: Members of the Gonzalez Family (Schedule Pending).

THE TWIN TITANS OF TERROR!

(60 MINUTES) SAT AUG 31ST – 11:30AM

Author Julian David Stone returns with an all-new presentation on the careers of the two actors most responsible for horror becoming the thriving genre that it is today. Drawing on the extensive research he did for his novel, It’s Alive!, about the making of the 1931 Frankenstein, Stone tells the story of these two giants of horror, from their early days as aspiring actors to their overnight success from their breakout roles in Dracula and Frankenstein, to their incredible decade long careers making one classic horror film after the next, with a special emphasis on the eight films they made together.

TV POKES FUN AT ITSELF!

Our eighth iteration of Cinecon’s popular retrospective of rare moments from live television captured on film before the advent of videotape. The main focus this year is on TV poking fun at itself and not taking itself too seriously, even in its infant days. We’ll feature Jack Oakie in his first starring role in a live television broadcast, The Battle for Wednesday Night with Rudy Vallee and Earl Holliman. Plus, we’ll be screening clips of Jack Benny, Fred Allen, Robert Preston, and Tina Cole.

Tina Cole Special Guest

CINECON SPECIAL GUEST

Cinecon is pleased to welcome actress and singer Tina Cole to the festival on Saturday afternoon. Although she is best known for her role as Katie Douglas on My Three Sons, she also appeared on Hawaiian Eye and The King Family Show, among others. She is the daughter of Yvonne King, who was one of the famous singing King Sisters. Tina will be signing copies of her new autobiography, My Three Lives, in the lobby after Kinecon and into the dinner break on Saturday.

World Premiere screening!

Last year we were thrilled to present three of the newly restored Hal Roach two-reel comedies from 1927 that Serge Bromberg had been working on. This year we are pleased to screen three more Stan & Ollie comedies from 1928 and the quality is unlike anything we’ve seen before. The film titles are From Soup to Nuts, We Faw Down and Leave ‘Em Laughing. All are courtesy of Lobster Films and Flicker Alley.
