CONCURRENT SPECIAL PROGRAMS
SOUNDIES AND JUKEBOX SHORTS OF THE 1940’S
SATURDAY, SEPT 3RD – 11AM (90 MIN SESSION)
HOLLYWOOD HERITAGE MUSEUM – 2100 N. HIGHLAND
The 1940s saw a brief if audacious experiment in mass entertainment: a jukebox with a screen. Patrons would insert a dime, then listen to and watch a three-minute musical short. Our special program explores this long-forgotten niche in entertainment and cultural history with a variety of both Soundies as well as the products of its many competitors. Among the films that will be shared in this program are several rarities, some one-of-a-kind. Join us for 90 minutes of entertainment and delight in the music of such artists as Nat “King” Cole, Duke Ellington, Merle Travis, Louis Jordan, Henny Youngman, Kay Starr, and many more. Hosted by jazz-on-film expert Mark Cantor, whose forthcoming essay The Soundies will undoubtedly be the definitive reference book on this subject when it is released this fall.
PROPERTY MASTERS GUILD PRESENTATION
SUNDAY, SEPT 4TH – 11:30AM (60 MIN SESSION)
HOLLYWOOD HERITAGE MUSEUM – 2100 N. HIGHLAND
The Property Masters Guild screens The Property Man (1914) starring Charlie Chaplin, with live musical accompaniment by pianist Adam Swanson in the Lasky-DeMille Barn, one of Hollywood’s first film stages, followed by a lively discussion about film props from the silent to sound era.
Guest speaker, Hope Parrish PMG, a third-generation property master whose grandfather started in the silent film era, will talk about the recreation of the film set for “Hell’s Angeles” in The Aviator. Hope’s illustrious career also included Water of Elephants, Django Unchained, Big Littles Lies, etc. She is the current president of the Property Masters Guild.
Guest speaker, Beth Werling, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, oversees one of the largest collections of silent film era artifacts, from the bat from Dracula (1931) to Mary Pickford’s curls. Beth is a collections manager, history lecturer, author, and board member of Hollywood Heritage.
Moderator Jeffrey Johnson PMG has been a property master for three decades. Recently he has been working in Hungary on Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Jeff is vice president of the Property Masters Guild.
